The challenge

SouthCal Landscape Corporation handles drainage, hardscape, and landscaping projects across Southern California. Like most field-service businesses, the people who answer the phone are the same people out on job sites. Calls get missed, spam interrupts real work, and new customers who reach voicemail often just call the next company.

The solution

Roth Digital AI built and launched a custom AI phone agent for SouthCal Landscape on June 22, 2026. The agent answers every call, works out what the caller needs, and collects their name, phone number, service request, and preferred timing. It closes every call with a clear confirmation. When a call needs a person, it takes a message and arranges a callback instead of guessing.

The results

Over the first three months, the agent answered 121 calls. We opened every call and read its transcript. No call was categorized from the platform's automatic summary.

All inbound calls (121)

Genuine customer calls (23)

Take out spam, sales pitches, internal testing, and non-customer calls, and 23 calls came from real landscaping customers. That's the number that matters:

22 of 23 real customers (96%) got the right outcome. Either the AI resolved their request entirely, or it recognized a person was needed and set up a callback.

Just as valuable: nearly half of all inbound calls were spam or robocalls. The agent absorbed every one of them. No ringing phone, no interrupted job site visit, nothing for the owner to screen.

Real calls, handled

Three examples of the agent at its best. Caller details are shortened for privacy.

An HOA president with a complicated drainage problem

7 min 22 sec · Estimate request

The caller, president of an HOA in Dana Point, gave a long, detailed description of water pooling against a building where concrete may have covered a drain. The agent listened through the whole explanation without interrupting or losing the thread.

"Absolutely, that sounds like something we can help with — drainage solutions are definitely one of our specialties…"

AI agent

It then gathered the property details and her availability (mornings after 9 AM) and logged the estimate request.

A returning customer confirming a same-day appointment

2 min 04 sec · Appointment confirmation

The caller wanted to confirm a French drain appointment he had already booked. When his answer didn't match the agent's first summary, the agent caught the mismatch and asked again instead of guessing.

"Thanks for clarifying. So, you scheduled for someone to come by at twelve o'clock today… you just want to confirm that appointment. Is that right?"

A hardscape quote on a bad connection

1 min 49 sec · Quote request

Speech-to-text garbled the caller's phone number across several attempts. The agent stayed patient and methodical. It captured his name, number, service need (hardscape and drainage), and timing ("as soon as possible"), then closed professionally.

"Perfect, I have everything I need. Someone from SouthCal Landscape Corporation will be in touch with you very soon to confirm everything. Have a great day!"

What we learned

The one mishandled call. On a call with heavy crosstalk and poor audio, the agent got the caller's name but couldn't understand the request. It kept trying to clarify for over two minutes instead of handing off.

The fix: a fallback rule. After about two clarification attempts with no new information, the agent offers a callback from a real person instead of looping.

The voice platform's own automatic scoring rated that failed call "Successful" with "Positive" sentiment. Dashboard metrics alone would have missed it. That's why we review real transcripts for our clients, and why every number on this page comes from reading all 121 calls.

The bottom line

From HOA presidents describing complicated drainage problems to callers on bad connections, SouthCal Landscape's AI agent consistently gathered the right details (name, service need, timing) and ended every real call with a clear next step. The business now has a full-time receptionist that never misses a call, never gets flustered, and never lets a lead go to voicemail.

Methodology

Scope: every call to the SouthCal Landscape agent from June 22 to September 21, 2026 (121 calls) was individually opened and its transcript read. The owner's internal test calls (26) and non-customer calls such as vendors, job seekers, wrong numbers, and callers who hung up before giving details (9) are reported separately so they don't distort customer-facing results. Two log entries were reclassified during review after cross-checking. Platform-generated "success" and "sentiment" labels were not used for categorization.
